Looking for your perfect wedding venue? You won’t go wrong with Granny Mouse Country House & Spa. Considered one of the most romantic venues in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, weddings at Granny Mouse are truly spectacular. With everything you could possibly need based on-site, from the idyllic chapel with panoramic views over the Caversham Valley, a reception venue catering for up to 120 guests, a culinary team ready to create your unique wedding feast to surprise and delight, to a pastry chef to sculpt your perfect wedding cake.

“Our Mouse House offers the very best in opulent accommodation coupled with old-world charm and service, embedded into the ethos and foundations of this historic hotel” says GM Sean Granger, “and our serene and picturesque location along the Lions River combines country ambiance with modern comforts.”

Your wedding guests will be well catered for, with an array of accommodation options, including the 12-sleeper Farmhouse, a mere 900 metres from the hotel, as well as the spa to help relax and rejuvenate you before your big day.

The dedicated on-site team is ready to assist, with no detail being too big or too small.

Here are some theme ideas they have selected for your big day:

For a South African flavour, opt for proteas or more local favourites, like the strelitzia, or a variety of succulents in your bridal bouquet and your décor.

Natural materials like wood, leaves, grasses, quills, and feathers are tasteful ways of introducing an African vibe into your invitations, clothing and décor. Think big bonfires bright cushions in African prints or hay bales covered in fabric. You can also look at incorporating animal prints like zebra and giraffe (in tasteful doses).

Your menu is a great place to showcase all things South African:

potjies, braaied meat and salads, bunny chows, or old-school roasts.

Serve old brown sherry in enamel mugs, stew on enamel plates and beer in proper SA beer mugs. Pair these with modern ideas to create a really unique menu, such as creamy samp and beans with a chilli and chocolate rump; or braaied lamb chops with a blue cheese crumble.

Serve biltong and droë wors with the welcome drinks to keep guests busy while you have your photographs taken. Consider adding a guacamole or sweet chilli dip to keep things interesting.

Instead of a served dessert, have a dessert buffet table with all sorts of local goodies. These may include fruity Fizzers, koeksisters, Fizz Pops, hot mosbolletjies slathered in butter, milk tart, and Malva pudding. Serve proper ‘moerkoffie’ and rusks after the meal.

For your guest favours, wrap Zoo biscuits or traditional rusks in cute bags or glass jars. Alternatively, have wire and bead goodies made for each guest (such as a picture frame, fridge magnet or clothes pin).

Instead of bunting, drape strings of colourful African beads around your venue or over your tables.

The South African music scene is booming, so gooi in some great local tunes.

If local isn’t that lekker to you, here are a few more ideas:

Vintage

Classic and vintage styles are making one heck of a comeback. Many brides are going back to the classic vintage wedding theme as a way to look back on decades past.

Your wedding outfit and look will be able to bring out this theme with ease. For the ceremony you can utilise antique décor such as weathered wooden seats to exemplify your vintage theme. Have a mailbox- a sweet way to collect any cards you may receive on the day. Complete the theme by leaving in a vintage car.

Whimsical

For the couple who likes to stand out, a whimsical wedding theme is one you should consider. This theme incorporates bright splashes of colour against the classic neutral wedding colours.

You can incorporate quirky design elements such as multi-coloured balloons, streamers and flowers to your theme. Mix things up by having mismatched chairs and unique décor at your guests’ tables. You can also make the cutlery and crockery unique and different for each table for an extra dose of whimsy.

Modern

With geometric shapes, thick and clean designs as well as minimal designs, the modern theme is becoming very popular for weddings. You can add this modern spin to anything, from straying away from the traditional white wedding dress to your venue decorations, seating and colour scheme.

Rustic

For the couple who loves the outdoors and country life, a rustic theme might be suited for you. String up some fairy lights along the walls or in the trees, use mason jars, twine, lace and plenty of wood for this theme.

The rustic theme is much loved by couples who enjoy DIY projects and making unique things for themselves, so think along those lines for wedding favours too.

Bohemian

For the brides that love being carefree yet beautiful, you will absolutely love the bohemian wedding theme. The wedding dress for the boho bride will be much like the theme - calm and carefree while still looking beautiful.

For décor you can keep everything simple yet elegant. Utilise oriental rugs, decorative pillows and cute hanging decorations. A colourful assortment of décor and flowers can be a nice refreshing touch to this theme as well.

Celestial

For star-crossed lovers who want to showcase their love from the heavens, a celestial wedding theme is a great choice. You can already incorporate this theme at the stage of your wedding invitations, making them look stellar for your guests. You can then look at how you want to use this theme in your wedding venue and create an ambiance of a starry night’s sky.

You can even channel some celestial magic into your wedding dress. Use stars and translucent material or stray away from a white dress to make yourself shine like the star you are.
