Pinetown
General Information
Pinetown is located in the eThekwini region of KwaZulu Natal and is a popular town to live in the greater Durban region. Named after the governor of Natal, Sir Benjamin Pine, Pinetown was once the main waggon route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Established in 1850 around the Wayside Hotel, a number of German settlers made Pinetown their base.
Pinetown is made up of several suburbs including New Germany and Cowies Hill. New Germany is known for its light industrial area as well as its Nature Reserve. The New Germany Nature Reserve has a small picnic site and excellent hiking trails. Cowies Hill is a small residential area of which is highly featured during the Comrades Marathon, an annual race held between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Pinetown is a good property investment as the properties here are affordable with the area offering good schooling, shopping complexes and sporting facilities. Lahee Park is the hub of the sporting arena with gymnastics, cricket, martial arts, soccer, rugby and much more.
Every year Pinetown's main street is blocked off for the Supermotard National. This involves racing on scramblers through the streets and is enjoyed by keen spectators - a fun event to suit the whole family.
